Cryogenic Systems and Ultra Low Temperature Cryostats |
|
| |
The engineers at Scientific Magnetics have wide
experience in the design and manufacture of cryogenic systems for a wide
range of large and complex superconducting magnet projects.
These include a superfluid helium system to operate in zero gravity,
cryogen-free cooling systems for LTS and HTS superconducting magnets, and
frozen nitrogen systems for cooling magnesium diboride superconductors.
In addition, we design and manufacture a wide range of low and ultra-low
temperature inserts. |

Cryogenic inserts |
 |
Scientific
Magnetics offers a wide range of cryogenic inserts designed to interface
easily with our superconducting magnet systems. Standard variable
temperature inserts, special inserts (for example, for UHV
compatibility) and ultra low temperature inserts can all be provided and
fully systemised. These are available in normal (helium-cooled) or
cryogen free versions.

Helium-3 refrigerator inserts |
The Scientific Magnetics compact
helium-3 insert features a base temperature below 0.3 K and a hold time
of more than 36 hours. As an option, it can be supplied with an
integrated 4 T superconducting magnet.

Cryogen-free dilution refrigerators |
 |
Scientific Magnetics works with
BlueFors Cryogenics Oy of Finland
to supply cryogen-free (pulse-tube driven) dilution refrigerators.
Features of these systems include: fast turnaround time; no low
temperature vacuum seals (including measurement wiring); fully automated
cool down from room to base temperature; and a mechanically decoupled
pulse tube to assure low vibration levels.
BlueFors Cryogenics and Scientific Magnetics have combined their
expertise to offer integrated cryogen-free dilution refrigerators and
cryogen-free superconducting magnets, all operating from a single
cooler.

Special cryostats |
Scientific
Magnetics has the engineering and instrumentation skills to design and
build equipment for cryogenic testing of components and systems.
The illustrated cryostat system was designed and manufactured by
Scientific Magnetics to test fault current limiters manufactured from
magnesium diboride (MgB2) superconductor. It is suitable for
cryogenic operations at temperatures down to 25 K and although primarily
designed for use with frozen nitrogen, other cryogenic fluids may also
be used with the system. It is cooled using a mechanical cryocooler and
so can also be operated with no cryogenic fluid at all (cryogen free).

Vapour-cooled current leads |
 |
We have extensive
experience in designing and building vapour cooled current leads for
existing or new cryostats. Leads are available to carry currents up to
20kA.
